HENDRICK HUDSON CHAPTER, HUDSON, NY
Home History Benefactor Meetings Patriots News Real Daughters Links Welcome The Hendrick Hudson Chapter, NSDAR, was organized December 26, 1895, at the home of Margaret Collier. The DAR charter was applied for and received on May 1, 1896. A chapter building fund was then started to provide a permanent home. When Mrs. Frances Chester White Hartley, a charter member of NSDAR, learned of the project, she purchased the Robert Jenkins House and presented it to the chapter on May 15, 1900. The house was built in 1811 by Robert Jenkins, the son of one of the Proprietors of the City of Hudson, who went on to serve as the third and fifth mayor of the city. Mrs. Hartley was a granddaughter of Robert Jenkins and was born in the house. Today the Hendrick Hudson Chapter maintains the Robert Jenkins House Genealogical, Research, and History Reading Room, which contains a growing collection of Columbia County and regional genealogy, and the Robert Jenkins Historical Collection as a repository for memorabilia relating to the history of Hudson and the whaling industry. Included is a fine collection of whaling artifacts, Civil War firearms, a rare Zouave (Civil War) uniform, and paintings by artists of the Hudson River School. Tours are conducted for school groups, Scouts, and others interested in local history. The Robert Jenkins House is open to the public at scheduled times and by appointment. Telephone 518-828-9764 to schedule a tour or arrange time to use the Reading Room.
The objectives of our Society, DAR, are to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence, to promote the development of an enlightened public opinion, and to foster patriotic citizenship.
